Record start to our salmon season in Breiðdalsá!

Our main rivers have finally been officially opened up for fishing. They are late starters and it can be a pain to have to wait while most of the other Icelandic rivers have started one after the other. But mostly, the wait has been worth it, as we have had probably our best ever start for the Breiðdalsá and a very encouraging start to the Jökla fishery as well first day, but has slowed down a little now.  Low water levels, cold nights and sunny days have blemished the start to Hrúta but the fish are there, they have run early as in all Icelandic rivers this year.

Breiðdalsá started on Sunday. A trout fisherman fishing far up the valley actually though caugth the first salmon on Saturday and there were five more on the morning shift, four more in the afternoon, and as we write on Tuesday evening, there have some twenty five salmon been landed and at least as many lost. The biggest so far was a big one indeed, measuring 98 cm and weighing close to ten kilos, some 22 lbs. Most of the catch so far are mws‘s but there have been grilse sightings in the river, indicating that the grilse runs will be big, early grilse usually give that hint, so we are anticipating a really good season. Of course we are crossing our fingers for a new record, which would be the third in three years.....but ok, stop. It‘s early days yet, so lets not get carried away. For fun we have here video from the opening day in Breiðdalsá including a salmon rise to hitch fly on the surface, click here.

As for Hrúta. No fish on the first day but on the second day first salmon was caught in extremly low water so we desperate need rain there. But forecast is for that later this week and that would be perfect.

We have never had so many big fish caught in Minni trout river as this season it is fair to say, brown trout 4-6 kg which is a tremendous size by any standard.

Some last minute opening is possible if you are looking for some good salmon and trout fishing, dont hesitate to contact us for further information.
