Iceland extremely popular for the coming season!

Spring is back here in Iceland and several rivers were opened for fishing on the first day of April. Most of them are sea trout rivers, a few have non migratory brown trout. The weather so far has been mostly favorable and much better than last year which has resulted in good fishing.

The sea trout are still in the rivers and traditionally they stay there until mid May. We still have access to  sea trout river Tungulækur which has been its usual outstanding self, over six hundred were landed in the first nine days of the month and the fishing has been consistently outstanding since. There are unusually many very large trout this year, 75 to 98 centimeter (aprox 8 to 20 pounders) and the same may be said of other sea trout rivers in the region.

Our very own Minnivallalækur has only seldom been fished due to it being far inland and thus more often very cold up there. But with the improving weather the fishing has improved as well. Recently almost thirty browns had been registered, the largest up to 76 centimeters. Our next trout beats open up on the 1rst of May, mainly the trout and char beat of Breiðdalsá.

It is fair to say that Iceland is probably more popular place for anglers than ever before, both for salmon and trout anglers. Most salmon rivers are fully booked in the country and our Hrútafjarðará river is sold out but we still have some lucrative openings on the other two, Jökla and Breiðdalsá due to cancellations. Of course we never know to what extent the grilse turn up but we are fully expecting an excellent MWS season, as the grilse runs were fantastic last year. This should then mean good run of early 2SW fish in July we expect. We also have several good options for Minnivallalækur after the 5th of August and it would then be possible to combine it with days on Tungulækur which is close by.
But here are some openings in our salmon rivers Breiddalsa and Jökla which are available:

Combo Breiddalsa & Jökla
1-8 July 2-4 rods
Combo Breiddalsa & Jökla 9-13 July 2-4 rods
Same combo 14-19 July 1 rod
Jökla river 27 July – 1 August 1 rod
Combo Breiddalsa & Jökla 6-13 August 2 rods
And few rods in late half of August can be offered as well.

Please enquiry!

Jack Hemingway in Breiddalsa

You might also want to check out the video we have posted on our website, starring the late Jack Hemingway. He fished on the Breiðdalsá river during the season of 2000. It also include some happy moments in the lodge where he syng the „Salmon Blues“ with great skill! In the autumn he then passed away, so it was one of his final flings with the fly rod.

PS: I will be in London10-14 May and look forward to meet many of my friends then and also other anglers who want to learn more about Icelandic fishing so dont hesitate to drop me a line!
