Breiðdalsá Char/Trout & Salmon fishing at top and bottom beats
Breiðdalsá offers fine trout fishing from 1.May to 30.September. Specially there is excellent fishing for sea-run char in the rivers estuary but the upper reaches offer some great brown trout fishing as well and now recently both beats are getting good for salmon as well.
The best period for the char is on the ebb tide, particularly the last two hours, when the shoals of char are drifting downstream on their way back to sea. Sport is often fast and furious! There are also opportunities to catch char on the flood tide.
For brown trout we concentrate on the upper section of the Breiddalsá, upstream of the waterfall on the south valley river. Here river flows more slowly through grassy meadows and the pools are long and deep and hold trout of good size. There has also been an increase in sea trout coming into the river, and the last few seasons have produced fish from 10 to 15lb.In the estuary the fishing is mostly done with flashy streamers that attract the Arctic char or with scud imitations. In the upper reaches the brown trout often get fooled by a small midge or caddis imitation as well as small streamers initating small fish, like the Black Ghost and the local fly Rektor.
The lodge may be booked by parties of up to 6 rods for char and trout fishing until the salmon season starts on July 1. This can be on a self-catering or staffed basis. After July 1. we offer accommodation in a nearby lodge located in the northern valley. We offer both self catering and full board accommodation there as well. And now with increasing salmon runs, anglers on the trout beats can expect good salmon fishing as well as for trout and char. This is an interesting proposition for small groups looking for quailty fishing on a tighter budget than the full service lodge requires.
